MUMBAI: The Nehru Nagar police on Sunday arrested three youths for allegedly raping a 24-year-old mentally ill woman over a period. The matter came to light when the victim’s brother came to know during health check up of his ill sister that she is six-month old pregnant.

Senior inspector Bhimdev Rathod said the victim revealed the incident only after several hours after her brother convinced her to name the accused. “The three accused — – Ravi alias Salim Shaikh (22), Kalu alias Prashant Kamble (23) and Salman Shaikh (19) — use to rape her on different occasions. The incident has occurred in front of victim’s sister. But she too is mentally ill and didn’t retaliate when the victim was raped,” said Rathod. After the incident came to light a complaint was lodged against the trio. The complainant works as a labourer and resides with his two sisters in Hanuman Nagar in Kurla (East). On Friday, the complainant found out that his sister was pregnant. In the complaint, the victim’s brother said, “When I inquired about it I found out the names of two men and immediately reported the matter to the police. The accused too are labourers.”

Childline rescues girl

5-Mar-013

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : “She looked happy and smiled when she was given a new dress,” said S.K.Ratheesh , a staff of Childline, a 24-hour emergency service for children in distress, about two-and-a-half-year-old Annu (name changed).

The rescue team at Childline found her on Monday on the streets at Ottur, near Kallambalam, in the company of seven stray dogs and a mentally challenged grandmother.

The team had received a call on 1098, the 24-hour emergency number for children in distress, on Sunday night. “The caller said he had seen the child in pathetic living conditions, abandoned by the mother during mornings when she goes for work. The only company was a mentally challenged old woman. We reached the spot on Monday morning. She wore no dress, street dogs were playing around her, and the whole place was in a very deplorable condition,” said Mr. Ratheesh.

The team informed the police and with the help of a few local people drove away the dogs and rescued the child.

“The elderly woman, presumed to be the child’s grandmother, did not say a word or react when we took the child. We informed the Child Welfare Committee and as per the order, the child was taken to the childcare centre at the Missionaries of Charity home at Kunnukuzhi,” said the staff.

The child’s mother, who the local people say is working at a pump station near Attingal, has been asked to present herself before the committee hearing on Tuesday. Further actions will be taken after a meeting with the child’s mother, said an official at Childline.

Psychiatrist blames media for violence against women

6-March-2013

KOTTAYAM : The glorification of masculinity by the media has been a major reason in cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse, according to Varghese Punnoose, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, Alappuzha Medical College.

He was delivering a presentation during a seminar that was jointly organised by Spirituality, Life and Mental Health Movement (SAMM) and BCM College Women’s Forum here on Tuesday. Dr. Punnoose said the media generally portray males to be superior through its various programmes. “The frequent practice of depicting domestic violence through serials and similar shows have instilled among many that they signified male supremacy. The dangerous trend has played a significant role in similar occurrences in society.

He said studies have proven that most sexual offenders did not indulge in criminal acts seeking sexual pleasure. However, they were mainly influenced by their urge to display power and anger that are commonly considered to symbolise masculinity.
